XU Ke has won the 2013 IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) Graduate Student Fellowship, which is given to 10 most outstanding Ph.D students in the IPS. The fellowship consists of an award of a $1000.00 honorarium and the recipients will be attending the award presentation at IEEE Photonics Conference in USA, September, 2013.

Mr. XU joined the Department of Electronic Engineering as a Ph.D candidate in 2010 and is currently working towards his Ph.D degree under the supervision of Prof. TSANG Hon Ki. His research focuses on integrated silicon photonic devices and their applications in advanced optical communications and high speed optical interconnects.

He worked as a research visiting student in the Department of Photonics, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan in August 2012, in collaboration with Prof. CHOW Chi Wai. Multilevel modulations using silicon modulator with Gb/s data rate was experimentally demonstrated for the first time. He will join the Department of Electrical Engineering, Yale University as a research visiting student supported by Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence 2013-2014. He will work on carbon integrated photonic circuits jointly advised by Prof. TSANG Hon Ki and Prof. TANG Hong.

Mr. XU is a student member of IEEE and IPS. Until now, he has authored and co-authored over 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences including 6 first author journal articles.

Congratulations!

Wong Wing Sze, Wong (Ph.D. student in BME) won the certificate of merit in the IEEE EMBS Hong Kong – Macau Joint Chapter Student Paper Competition 2013 (project title: Effects of thickness and surface treatments on the bonding strength in PDMS-PDMS microfluidic devices | supervisor: Douglas Yung)

Congratulations!

Prof. MENG Qing Hu and YUAN Yixuan (PhD student admitted to the Department of Electronic Engineering in 2012 with a successful HKPFS award) won the Toshio Fukuda Best Paper Award in Mechatronics at the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, held from August 3 to 6, 2013 in Takamatsu, Japan.

The winning project of the CUHK team was named 'Switch Off PAHs'. They have designed a voltage switch to control the enzymatic reactions of bacteria so that they can degrade poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) more effectively, such as benzo-a-pyrene (BaP), a common environmental pollutant and a well-known carcinogen. This innovative technology may be useful in improving air quality and public health.
