Prof. Cliff C. K. CHAN (Degree from CUHK: PhD 1984)

Prof. Cliff C K CHAN is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of TeleEye Holdings Limited. TeleEye Group was Hong Kong’s first university spin-off company to become a public listed company. Based on technology developed in University, TeleEye’s products are exported to over 50 countries and received accumulated revenue in excess of HK$400 million over the years. Prior to managing the Group on a full-time basis in 2001, Prof. Chan had lectured at the CityU for fifteen years. He has published extensively in signal and image processing fields and has received numerous awards including the IEEE Third Millennium Award in 2000 and the Grand Prize in Applied Research Excellence Award of the CityU in 1998. In 1996, the EDN ASIA Magazine also named him an “EDN ASIA Innovator” for his contributions in image compression research. TeleEye Group has also won numerous awards in product innovation and business areas including the Gold Award 2007 HKEIA Award for Outstanding Innovation & Technology Products Top Brand Award and the 2007 Hong Kong Top Brand Award.

Prof. Chan is a Council Member of Hong Kong Productivity Council and an adjunct professor of City University of Hong Kong. He served as the Chairman of Industry and Technology Committee of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce from 2006 to 2009 and the Chairman of IEEE Hong Kong Section from 1995 to 1996.

Prof. Chan received his PhD in 1984 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his MSc and BSc in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1978 and 1977.

Mr. Cheung Yiu Wah, Raymond (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1980)

Mr. Cheung serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Keybase Global (HK) Limited and he also currently serves as Advisor to Sevi Advent Private Equity. Prior to establishing Keybase in 2009, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Syniverse Technologies Inc. Asia Pacific Region for 3 years. Prior to joining Syniverse in 2006, he was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Interactive Technology Holdings Limited (ITHL) from 2002. ITHL was acquired by Syniverse in 2006. From 1994, he was the founder and Managing Director of IVRS (International) Limited which was further re-structured to become ITHL in 2002.

After graduation in 1980, he served in a wide range of managerial positions in the Hong Kong Jockey Club and PCCW, formerly Hongkong Telecom. Mr. Cheung has over 30 years of experience in telecommunications and software development in general and entrepreneurial venture in particular. He earned his BSC degree in Electronics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Lam Cheung Wei (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1987)

Dr. Cheung-Wei Lam is currently the Chief EMC Technologist at Apple, where he has implemented a fully automated and customized EMC layout and schematic checking system. At Apple, he is also engaged in chip, PCB and system level EMC design and research. Prior to joining Apple, he was a Co-Founder and Principal Engineer at Transcendent Design Technology and, earlier, a Principal Engineer in Viewlogic’s Advanced Development Group (formerly Quad Design Technology). From 1988 to 1993, he was with the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, where his focus was on modeling of high-speed interconnects and superconducting transmission lines. Dr. Lam received the B.S. degree in electronics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the S.M. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. He has authored or presented numerous technical papers and presentations on EMC and signal integrity related subjects in the US, in Europe and in Asia. He was a co-recipient of the best paper award at the 1996 IEEE EMC Symposium. He is a past IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer and currently serves in the IEEE EMC Society Respected Speakers Bureau. He has also served on the IEEE EMC Society TC-9 Computational Electromagnetics committee, the IEEE EMC Society TC-10 Signal Integrity committee, and the SAE EMC Modeling Task Force committee.

Mr. Lam Lung, Eric (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1976)

Eric is one of our students in the very early days of CU. He is the graduate of Year 76 of the Electronics Department of the United College. After graduation, he worked for the private sector in the field of IC testing, computer and telephone services. In 1983, he joined the Post Office of the Hong Kong Government, responsible for overseeing the operation of public telecommunications services. In 1995, upon the establishment of Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), he was transferred from the Post Office to OFTA to serve the telecommunications industry up to the present. During his 30-year government services, his responsibility areas cover deregulation of the telecom services, licensing of public and private telecommunications systems, interference investigations, technical consumer protection and international affairs. Now, as Assistant Director (Support), his main responsibility areas are technical standards, international relations and anti-spamming.

Mr. Lee Wai Kwong (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1977)

Mr. Lee Wai Kwong is the Chief Executive Officer of ASM Pacific Technology Ltd., the world’s largest supplier of semiconductor assembly and packaging equipment. ASM is listed in the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

Mr. Lee graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a B.Sc and a M.Phil degrees in Electronics. He also received his MBA degree from The National University of Singapore.

During his time as a student of The Chinese University of Hong Kong he also served as the President of the University Student Union in 1976.

Mr. Lee has more than thirty years working experiences in the computer and semiconductor equipment industry in Hong Kong and Singapore. After spending the first ten years of his career in Hong Kong, mainly on technical and technical management, Mr. Lee moved to Singapore in 1990 and shifted his career focus to business and general management. He took over as the Chief Executive Officer of ASM Pacific Technology Group since the beginning of 2007.

Mr. Lee is currently serving as Advisory Committee members for both the Mechanical and Automation Engineering (MAE) department and the Electronic Engineering (EE) department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Mr. Lee is residing in Singapore with his wife and their three boys between 9 to 16 years old.

Dr. Hon. Samson Tam, J.P. (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1986)

Dr. Samson Tam is a Legislative Councilor from the functional constituency of Information Technology.

He is the founder and Chairman of Group Sense (International) Ltd. He is now a member of Digital 21 Strategy Advisory Committee and the Small and Medium Enterprises Committee, the Chairman of Hong Kong Trade Development Council ICT Services Advisory Committee and Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council. He is also the Chairman of the TechMatrix Research Centre, which is a local technology think tank.

Dr. Tam graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1986 with a Bachelor degree of Science (Hons), and later was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In 1992, Dr. Tam was awarded the “Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong” in recognition of his business achievement and contribution to the local industrial sector. He was also named one of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” in 1997.

Ir Wong Ping-fai (Degree from CUHK: BSc 1982)

Ir P.F. Wong is currently the Assistant Director-General (Air Traffic Management) of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD), Hong Kong Government, supervising air navigation services provided for air traffic operating to/from the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) as well as all aircraft overflying in the Hong Kong airspace.

Apart from air traffic operations, Ir Wong has vast engineering, project, and management experience in air traffic control (ATC) and navigation services. In mid 1990's, Ir Wong was the Project Manager in charge of various ATC, communications, and navigation systems commissioned for the new HKIA at Chek Lap Kok. He also took lead in the new satellite-based Air Traffic Management (ATM) Systems Project for Hong Kong, and is now the Task Force Leader overseeing the provision of replacement ATC facilities for the New Air Traffic Control Centre, which is being constructed with the CAD Headquarters on Airport Island and to be ready-for-service in 2013.

Ir Wong obtained his B.Sc. degree in Electronics with 1st Class Honours from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1982. Ir Wong joined the Government as an Assistant Electronics Engineer in 1985. He was promoted to Chief Electronics Engineer in 1999 and to Assistant Director-General of Civil Aviation in 2008. Ir Wong was the head of Air Traffic Engineering & Standards Division in CAD, and has been the Assistant Director-General (Air Traffic Management) taking charge day-to-day air traffic operations in Hong Kong since May 2009.

Ir Wong is a Chartered Engineer in UK and a Registered Professional Engineer in Hong Kong. He is also an Inspector of Air Accidents appointed by Hong Kong Government for aircraft accidents investigation.

Ir Wong has been awarded the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Government/Public Service on the 2010 Honours List.

Mr. Wong Wai-kay, Ricky (Degrees from CUHK: BSc 1985, MBA 2008)

Mr. Ricky Wong Wai-kay is the co-founder and chairman of the Group. He is a veteran in the telecommunications industry, with extensive experience in technical, marketing & sales aspects. Mr. Wong holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science in Electronics (1985) and a Master of Business Administration Degree under Executive MBA Programme (2008) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Innovative as the Key

In 1992, Mr. Wong set up City Telecom and provided alternative IDD service with call-back technology in Hong Kong, that has brought to the subsequent collapse of monopoly of the market. In 1999, he set up Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited (HKBN), which is now the fastest growing and second largest broadband service provider in Hong Kong. HKBN is also the first operator to launch triple-play services (broadband, telephony, IP-TV services) on single network, as well as the first to launch residential Fibre-to-the-Home connectivity, with broadband speed ranges from 100Mbps to 1000Mbps.

In 2010, was voted amongst the top 100 most influential people in the industry in the world, hosted by The Global Telecoms Business Magazine. He is also the winner of Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010 China Awards, Telecom category.

Visionary & Strategic

Mr. Wong has a track record of commercial growth and achievement with the Group. As a chairman of a listed company (HKEX : 1137; NASDAQ : CTEL), he has steered the delegation of authority for the company’s sustainability, empowering Chief Executive Officer and other senior management with executive power & autonomy.

Mr. Wong is a winner of Directors Of The Year Awards 2005 in the category of Listed Company (SEHK Main Board) Executive Directors, hosted by The Hong Kong Institute of Directors (HKIoD), co-organized by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, the Government of the HKSAR, the Securities And Futures Commission and the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited.

“Never Give Up” Spirit

The Group managed to grow and lead the market in the highly competitive Hong Kong telecom industry, dominated by heavyweights. It was once analogized as the legend of David Vs Goliath.

Mr. Wong’s philosophy of persistence, belief and endeavour was recognized and he was selected as “Man of the Year” by Hong Kong Business Magazine in 2002.

Creativity

Mr. Wong is an iconic person in creativity. IDD1666, a symbolic but memorable access code was selected that has brought to the outstanding results. In 2001, City Telecom has become the second largest IDD operator in Hong Kong.

HKBN was also renowned for creative & bold marketing strategies. In 2005, Liu Xiang, China’s first male Olympic Track and Field God medallist was featured in the above-the-line advertisement. Later in 2008, another series of TV commercials, Squeeze and Kung Fu fighting ants has further brought HKBN to reach another height of public awareness & recognition.

With the co-efforts from Mr. Wong and advertising agencies, the group has won over 20 creativity awards over the years.

Caring & Self-Actualization

The well-being of employees is an essential part of Corporate Social Responsibility. Mr. Wong steered the introduction of "Life•Program•Exploration", with psychological counselling consultant to help talents pursuing dreams or seek professional advice in achieving self-actualization. Another talent upgrade program “Next Station: University”, which is unique in Hong Kong, was launched in 2009 to sponsor talents to achieve their dreams of earning a globally recognized degree.

In recent years, Mr. Wong has dedicated himself to community caring activities. He visited the unprivileged in Nepal & travelled to Antarctica to witness and experience the effects of global warming.

In addition to the above, Mr. Wong is a member of the Political Consultative Conference of Zhejiang Province. Wong is also enthusiastic in education; he is a trustee of the Board of Trustees of United College, a member of the Advisory Committee for the studies of Electronic Engineering and an honorary lecturer of the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also an Honorary Advisor and a member of the Committee on IT Training and Development of the Vocational Training Council, and a member of the executive committee of Digital Solidarity Fund of Hong Kong Council of Social Service.
