Gordon LEI Kin Pang, postgraduate student of Prof. Chester Shu in Opto-electronics Lab,, has won the first runner-up best paper award at the 8th IEEE LEOS (Hong Kong) Postgraduate Conference held on December 8, 2007 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The paper is entitled:

"30-nm Self-Compensated Dispersion Tuning of 10-GHz Short Pulses Generated from a SOA Ring Laser" by Gordon Lei, Mable Fok, and Chester Shu

Congratulations to Gordon !

SUN Deqing, supervised by Prof. W.K. Cham in the Visual Signal Processing and Communications (VSPC), has been awarded "Second Prize" in the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2006 (PG) Student Paper Contest. Title of paper:

"An effective postprocessing method for low bit rate block DCT coded image" has been awarded "Second Prize".

Congratulations Mr. Sun Deqing!

EE undergraduate summer project contributing to research activities in Scanning Probe Microscopy

Ms Joyce Ho, a Year 2 student who participated in the faculty-wide Student Enrichment Scheme, has done a great job in building a micro-processor based controller for STM tip fabrication.
She spent her summer in EE department to design a controller circuit that can perform accurate etching of a tungsten wire until the dimension of the tip is close to atomic scale. This tip is a vital piece of component in our STM (scanning tunneling microscope). Her supervisors, Prof. J.B.Xu and Prof. Aaron Ho, noted that this equipment has helped tremendously in their research activities as they routinely use STM for characterizing their electronic materials.

Well Done!

Mr. Wei-Mong Tsang, an EE alumnus and a former MPhil student of Prof. S.P. Wong, now studying for his PhD degree in University of Surrey, U.K., has been awarded the E.W. Müller "Outstanding Young Scientist" Award of the International Field Emission Society. This is the highest award given to a student working on field emission by the community. The award was made following his presentation at the joint 19th International Vacuum Nanoelectronics Conference and 50th International Field Emission Symposium, held this July in Guilin, China. This work is a collaboration between the Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey and the Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. S.P. Wong is one of the co-authors of the award winning paper entitled "Electron field emission properties of Co quantum dots in SiO2 matrix synthesised by ion implantation".

Congratulations to Mr. Wei-Mong Tsang and Prof. S.P. Wong!

Postgraduates in BME Research Center of our Department, have won the FIRST prize at the Innovation Projects Section at the National Challenge CUP in the 9th Challenge Cup.
