CUHK Undergraduate Students Win Silver Medal at iGEM Asia; Heading to US Next Month for World Championship

The CUHK genetic engineering team formed by 14 undergraduate students of science and engineering has won a silver medal at the iGEM (international Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree. They also won the Best New BioBrick Part or Device (Engineered) Award and were qualified to compete for the world championship with over 50 elite teams in the iGEM World Jamboree to be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in November. Four of the team members are from EE and BME programmes:

Prof. MENG, Max Qing Hu and YUAN Yi Xuan won the Toshio Fukuda Best Paper Award in Mechatronics

Prof. MENG, Max Qing Hu and YUAN Yi Xuan (PhD student admitted to the Department of Electronic Engineering in 2012 with a successful HKPFS award) won the Toshio Fukuda Best Paper Award in Mechatronics at the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, held from August 3 to 6, 2013 in Takamatsu, Japan.

Groundbreaking Development in Mid-IR Photo Detection by Prof. Tsang Hon Ki and Prof. Xu Jianbin

Prof. Tsang Hon Ki and Prof. Xu Jian-Bin and their research team of the Department of Electronic Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have successfully constructed a new device for detecting light in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral region. This groundbreaking work is expected to enable a new generation of high efficiency, low cost, and highly integrated mid-IR detectors which proceeds to the applications of mid-IR spectroscopy in environmental and biomedical engineering. The chemical spectroscopy can detect trace concentrations (parts per billion) of gases for enormous applications, such as air pollution monitoring and analysis of human breath for disease markers.

XU, Ke won the 2013 IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) Graduate Student Fellowship
