Mr. HU Gaolei, a year-4 PhD student under supervision of Prof. TSANG Hon Ki won one of the three Best Student Paper Awards at the IEEE Silicon Photonics Conference held in Tokyo on 15-18 April 2024 for his paper "Multimode-Fiber Imaging Using a Wavelength-Scanned Integrated Optical Phased Array”. He received a cash prize of 50,000 Yen sponsored by Sumitono Corporation. The prize recognized his innovative method for getting images from light transmitted by a multimode optical fiber in a single pixel imaging system. Mr Hu experimentally demonstrated how to recover high-resolution images with an optical fiber by using a silicon photonic chip to control the phases of the light in different modes in the multimode optical fiber illuminating the object to be imaged. The technique paves the way for future ultra-compact optical fiber based endoscopic imaging systems which make use of optical fibers of less than 0.2mm in diameter for imaging difficult to reach parts of the body in minimally invasive surgery, for example in deep brain imaging.

Another CUHK alumnus, FENG Kaiyin, who was introduced to silicon photonics during her undergraduate final year project at CUHK in 2015, won another of the three best paper prizes for her work on quantum dot lasers in University of California Sata Barbara under the supervision of Professor John Bowers.

Starting from 2022, the EE Department has decided to award up to three RPg students for their outstanding research output over the previous year (between July 2021 and June 2022 here).

The department's Research Committee has considered the nominations from the thesis supervisors to the EE Department's 2022 Postgraduate Student Research Awards, and shortlisted five RPg students: Li Yuanze (Solid State), Shen Fuhuan (Solid State), Yu Yue (Photonics), Yuan Sishen (Robotics) and Zhong Keyi (Photonics). The selected nominees have been invited to join a face-to face Presentation Seminar on February 21, 2023 (Tuesday). Based on the presentation performance and scientific merit of the presented research,  we have selected the following students for the 2021 EE Department's Postgraduate Student Research Excellence Awards.

  • Li Yuanzhe
  • Yu Yue
  • Shen Fuhuan

Apart from the Research Excellence Awards, we have also set up a Best Presentation Award to honor the most inspiring presentation. This year the award goes to Yu Yue.

Heartiest congratulations to the award recipients for their outstanding research achievements. We look forward to seeing more exciting works from our students in the years to come.
