The CUHK genetic engineering team formed by 14 undergraduate students of science and engineering has won a silver medal at theiGEM (international Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree. They also won the Best New BioBrick Part or Device (Engineered) Award and were qualified to compete for the world championship with over 50 elite teams in the iGEM World Jamboree to be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in November. Four of the team members are from EE and BME programmes:

  • Melisa JUNATA (BME)
  • SU Shang Yen (EE)
  • LING Yan To (BME)
  • SHENG Ruoyu (BME)

The winning project of the CUHK team was named 'Switch Off PAHs'. They have designed a voltage switch to control the enzymatic reactions of bacteria so that they can degrade poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) more effectively, such as benzo-a-pyrene (BaP), a common environmental pollutant and a well-known carcinogen. This innovative technology may be useful in improving air quality and public health.

Dr. Zhenzhou CHENG (supervisor: Prof. Hon Ki TSANG) is selected as one of the two finalists for Young Scientist Awards in Engineering Science Panel, by Hong Kong Institution of Science. Details of the Annual Conference can be found at www.science.org.hk . Congratulations!

At the annual conference of the Hong Kong Institution of Science held at University of Hong Kong on 23 November 2013, Dr Cheng Zhenzhou won the top prize in the HKIS young scientist award in the category of Engineering Science, and received a cash prize of HK$10,000 sponsored by Hong Kong Town gas. Dr Cheng Zhenzhou carried out his research as a PhD student in(Prof. Tsang's lab) with financial support from an RGC PhD fellowship and is now a postdoctoral fellow at CUHK. He was selected from a highly competitive field of 31 top scientists, including Prof. Chen Shuming who received an honorable mention and the $5000 runner's up prize. Dr Cheng's research was on silicon suspended membrane waveguides for mid-infrared photonics and his results on sub-wavelength grating couplers and graphene on silicon mid-infrared waveguide photodetectors was judged as one of the best examples of research in Hong Kong in Engineering Science.

Mr. Linkai (EE undergraduate) and Mr. Wang Zeng Yue (MAE undergraduate) won the 2nd prize (undergraduate teams) at the 13th National Challenge Cup for the project of “Battery-less Wireless Keyboard”. Congratulations!

Dr. Xiaomu WANG has been awarded the Dean's Outstanding Thesis Award 2012 on PhD thesis titled:

Graphene Interface Engineering: Surface/Substrate Modifications cum Metal Contact Exploration

Prof. J.B XU in EE Dept was Dr. Wang's supervisor on the project.

Dr. Wang has been offered a PostDoc position at the world renowned Cambridge University, UK.

Congratulations!!
