Ms. Qian Yao, second-year PhD student at the DSP and Speech Technology Laboratory, recently received the award of Microsoft Fellow in Beijing. The award presentation ceremony was held on 5 November 2003 during the "Computing in the 21st Century" conference organized by the Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). This year there are totally 28 Microsoft Fellows selected from the top universities in the Asia-Pacific Region (including China, Korea, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong). Ms. Qian is the among the 3 selected fellows from Hong Kong.

Chan Wai Nang and Kwong Pak Yin, who are currently final year students of our department, received the award of "Honourable Mention" in the 2003 Mobile Multimedia Communications Design Contest (MMCDC). Their project is titled "Mobile Tour Guide (MTG)". The project was nominated and advised by Prof. Lee Tan.

MMCDC is organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), with the aim to encourage and reward innovative local university students who explore beyond the boundaries of wireless, Internet and the converging mobile multimedia technologies. More than 30 teams participated in the contest. Only 5 of them were selected for awards.
