Prof. Y.T.Zhang has been elevated to IEEE Fellow effective 1 January 2007.
This year there are 268 IEEE fellows newly elevated in the world and there are total 6 from Hong Kong. Among these newly elevated IEEE Fellows, 2 are from HKUST and 4 are from CUHK. And Prof. YT Zhang in our dept. is one of the four at CUHK. Prof. Zhang's achievements and contributions were highly recognized by IEEE. As quoted by the IEEE 2006 President in the email:
* "for contributions to the field of wearable devices and signal processing algorithms for mobile healthcare" *
Koo Tak-Kuen John, our graduate of 1992, won the prestigious NSF Career Award of USA, by the project titled "Computation Platform for the Design of Hybrid Systems".
T. John Koo received the B.Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering and the M.Phil. degree in Information Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and the Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 2000. Since August 2003, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and the Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) at Vanderbilt University.

ICASSP is the most prestigious conference in the speech processing area. In this year, 570 papers were submitted in this area, and about 300 were accepted. Out of the 300 papers, those with a student as the first author could compete for the Student Best Paper Award.
Moreover, Dr. Yang was awarded the Spoken Language Processing Student Grant, sponsored by Drs. X. Huang, A. Acero and H. Hon, honors the student of an outstanding paper in the spoken language processing area accepted for publication in a conference sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
The title of Dr. Yang 's paper is:
"'Static and Dynamic Spectral Features: Their Noise Robustness and Optimal Weights for ASR'"

The award was presented by the Hong Kong Institute of Science on October 30, 2004. Dr. Chow was a B. Eng, M. Phil., and Ph.D graduate of our department. Currently, he is working as a postdoctoral fellow in the department and the Center for Advanced Research in Photonics.
