Liang Tak Keung, a home grown PhD graduate of our department, won the Outstanding Thesis Award 2004 of the Faculty of Engineering. His thesis title is:

"Silicon Planar Lightwave Circuits: Raman Amplification and Polarization Processing"

Under the supervision of Professor H. K. Tsang, Dr. Liang has done excellent work leading to one of the world's first demonstration that silicon can be used to amplify light (achieving 6.8dB net gain in the first attempt).

Congratulation to Dr. Liang and Prof. Tsang !

Wong Fai Leung (postgraduate student at the Microwave & Wireless Communication Laboratory) was awarded 1st Runner-Up in the Advance Program of the 5th IEEE (HK/Macau) AP/MTT Postgraduate Conference held at the University of Macau.

Paper Title: Novel Branch-Line Coupler Designs for Dual Band Applications

Author: F. L. Wong and K. K. Cheng

Abstract:
Branch-line coupler is a popular passive device for microwave and millimeter-wave applications. The standard design of branch line coupler offers specific power dividing ratio and phase relationship between the output ports over the operating bandwidth. Branch line coupler is commonly used as building blocks for balanced amplifier and mixers.

However, the conventional design of branch line coupler is basically consisted of quarter wavelength transmission lines which lead to inherent narrow band operation and as a result, its application to wide-band and multi-band system is thus greatly limited. In the past years, various reports concerning bandwidth enhancement and size reduction techniques have been published in the literature. Recently, dual band branch line coupler implemented using lumped elements was also reported.

In this paper, two novel planar 90?3-dB branch line coupler designs are presented. Both designs offer dual-band operation, low insertion loss and compact size. Basic operating principles of both configurations, practical implementation issues such as branch-line impedance realization are addressed. Finally, for experimental verification, both the simulated and measured results of 900/1800 MHz branch-line couplers constructed by microstrip technology are demonstrated.

CUHK Engineering Students Win Regional Championship in Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 Competition.

Content:
A student team from the CUHK Faculty of Engineering has won the Hong Kong Regional Championship in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 Competition. The team consists of: CHAN Wai Nang(Dept. of EE), TSE Hok Man (Dept. of IE) and WONG Po Yan (Dept. of SEEM) advised by Professor Helen MENG (SEEM). The team receives a cash prize of HKD120,000 awarded by Microsoft Hong Kong and will be representing Hong Kong to compete with other regional champion teams in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 World Finals in Brazil in July 2004.

The team has creatively designed and implemented a mobile, multimodal and multilingual system called Portable Shopping Companion (PSC) which is a distributed software system that runs on a mobile PDA client. The system supports bilingual (English and Chinese) speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis, automatic bi-directional English-Chinese machine translation, speaker verification (i.e. voiceprint security) and location-awareness using Wi-Fi hotspots. The system enables the user (shopper) to browse through product web pages, locate stores in an arcadewith the product in stock and help the user navigate a big arcade for particular stores. The system can also serve as an interpreter between an English-speaking tourist and a Chinese speaking salesman using real-time speech-to-speech translation technologies. The speaker verification component of PSC evolved from the final year project of Chan Wai Nang under the supervision of Prof. Tan Lee in the Dept. of EE.

This project is supported by the United College Budding Scholars Exchange Program (with exchange partner being University of Washington, Seattle) as well as the Human-Computer Communications Laboratory, CUHK Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management .

Tang Wing Wah (postgraduate student at the Optoelectronics Laboratory) was awarded the Third Prize (2nd runner up) of the IEEE LEOs (HK) Postgraduate Conference Paper Award, held on Nov 27, 2004 at HKUST.
