Tan Lee was born in Wuhan, China. He moved to Hong Kong in 1981 after finishing the first senior year (Gao1-Yi1) in Hubei Experimental High School. He received his BSc and MPhil degrees in Electronics, and PhD in Electronic Engineering, all from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in 1988, 1990 and 1996 respectively. During 1996 - 1997 and 1998 - 1999, he was a post-doctoral fellow in DSP & Speech Technology Laboratory, Department of Electronic Engineering, CUHK. From June 1997 to March 1998, Tan Lee was working at CTT, KTH as a post-doctoral researcher. Since August 1999, Tan Lee has been an assistant professor in Electronic Engineering at CUHK.

Tan Lee's research interests include automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, speech prosody and speech applications.

During his stay in Stockholm, Tan Lee learned some Swedish and here is all he could write:

Tan Lee kommer från Hong Kong, men han är född i Wuhan, Kina. Han studerade Electronic Engineering i Chinese University of Hong Kong. Nu är han en gästforskare i Centrum för talteknologi (CTT), Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH). Tan Lee är 30 år. Han är gift och sin fru heter Cynthia.

Tan har varit i Stockholm i 8 månader. Nu bor han med Cynthia i Abrahamsberg. Cynthia studerar i Institutionen för Internationell Pedagogik, Stockholms Universitet.

Tan är intresserad av basket-ball, fotboll och rodd. Pa måndagarna försöker han spela innebandy i KTH-hallen med sina jobbarkompisar. Han har spelat dåligt, men efterhand förkovrar han.

Tan har avslutat två Svenska språk kurser.
