Objective

This is a foundation course on telecommunication and related technologies. It describes the essential elements of a modern communication system. Students will learn the basic concepts in electrical communication, the operation principles and the performance requirements for a real-world communication system. The course is the basis of various advanced courses on electrical and optical communication.

Syllabus
  • Signals in communication
  • Overview of communication systems
  • Baseband communication
  • Amplitude modulation
  • Angle modulation
  • Modulators and Demodulators
  • Pulse transmission
  • Basics of information theory

Learning Outcome

By the end of this course, students will be able to

  • describe the architecture of a modern communication system and explain the functions of each component in the system
  • state and explain the major technical considerations in the design of a communication system
  • describe how the frequency spectrum of a signal is changed in the communication process
  • describe how noise, interference and channel distortion affect ommunication
  • evaluate the effect of noise on a communication system and suggest different solutions to improve the system’s performance at the presence of noise
  • give the mathematical formulation of amplitude modulation and angle modulation
  • for each modulation technique, explain the transformation of the signal in frequency domain
  • compute the bandwidth and power efficiency of different analog modulation techniques
  • describe the advantages and disadvantages of different analog modulation techniques
  • describe the principles and design of detectors, receivers, modulators and demodulators
  • state the basic principles of pulse transmission and explain how a pulse signal is changed during transmission
  • explain what is intersymbol interference
  • describe different pulse modulation schemes
  • evaluate the effect of quantization noise in pulse-code modulation and explain the advantage of non-uniform quantization
  • describe different keying techniques in digital modulation
  • explain the concept of source information entropy and state its important in communication system design
