Objective

This course is designed for students to gain an understanding of bioinformatics. Through this course, students will learn the basic concepts and fundamental techniques of bioinformatics from engineering aspects and how the engineering methodologies are used in biological systems, DNA sequence analysis and genetic engineering.

  • Introduction to bioinformatics and molecular biology for engineers
  • Genomics basics and molecular biology analysis tools
  • Engineering approaches and sequence alignment algorithms
  • Data network and database search algorithms
  • Substitution patterns and molecular phylogenetics
  • Synthetic biology and genetic engineering


Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Have an overall picture of the history, development and the state-of-the-art of bioinformatics
  • Understand how engineering approaches are applied to solve molecular biology problems
  • Apply learned algorithms and skills to perform sequence alignment and database search
  • Create innovative engineering tools and software modules for molecular biology analysis
