Resume of Career

Hon Tsang received the B.A. (Hons) degree in 1987 in Engineering (Electrical and Information Sciences), and the Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in 1991, all from the University of Cambridge. He worked on Quantum Confined Stark Effect waveguide modulators as a visitor at Bell Communications Research Inc. (Bellcore) in 1990. After three years as a postdoc at the University of Bath, he joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993 as a lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering. In 2001 he was appointed Director of ASOC Technology at Bookham Technology plc and moved to Bookham's headquarters in Oxfordshire UK. He rejoined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 as a professor and was appointed as Chairman of the Department in 2010. Hon Tsang has published over 280 papers in journals or conference proceedings. His recent research interests are in silicon photonics and waveguide components for communication applications (e.g. waveguide grating couplers, graphene waveguide devices for optical interconnects,devices for advanced modulation formats in optical communications ).

Highlights of Recent Achievements

  • X. Chen (PhD 2010) won award of US$2000 in the TSMC outstanding student research award in the category of Green Electronics in 2010.
  • Paper on how to make polarization independent grating couplers was most downloaded paper in Optics Letters in spring 2011.
  • Apodized focusing grating couplers demonstrated for suspended membrane silicon waveguide.
  • Broadband silicon grating couplers demonstrated for both SOI waveguides and suspended membrane waveguides.
  • Integration of tunable ring resonators with germanium detectors for DQPSK and DPSK receivers
