Prof. Chinlon Lin, Director of Centre for Advanced Research in Photonics and Professor of Photonics in the EE and IE departments, was invited to give a Plenary Talk at OECC2003, on "Photonics for Broadband Information Infrastructure: Past, Present and Future."

The 8th Opto Electronics and Communications Conference was held October 13-16, 2003 in Shanghai, P.R. China. OECC is an international conference for the Asia Pacific region with 600-700 international researchers in Optical Communications and Photonics from Australia, China, India, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore. Prof. Chinlon Lin, Director of Center for Advanced Research in Photonics and Professor of Photonics in the EE and IE departments, was invited to give a Plenary Talk at OECC2003, on Photonics for Broadband Information Infrastructure: Past, Present and Future. The other two Plenary speakers are from Chinese Academy of Engineering and NTT, Japan. Prof. Hon Tsang and his student, Po Shan Chan, from the EE department, presented a paper titled "Magnettostrictive Polarization Compensation on SOI Rib Waveguide" which received one of the best paper awards in the OECC.

Title: Photonics for Broadband Telecommunications -- Past, Present and Future

Author: Professor Chinlon Lin

Abstract:
Over the last 30 years or so, photonics scientists and optical communications engineers worldwide have collectively made significant contributions in the R and D of photonics for optical fiber telecommunications, including the enabling technologies, systems and network applications. This talk will present a personal perspective of the past, the present and the future of photonics for broadband telecommunications, covering the past achievements and their impacts, the present difficulties and uncertainties, as well as the future prospects of photonics in enabling a ubiquitous broadband society.
