Message from the chairman
Welcome to the EE Department website! Here you can find a wealth of information about the department. You can find out about the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes we offer. You will also see a brief description of our research activities. This gives you an idea about the diversity of our department, in fulfilling its mission to educate the future global leaders in electronic engineering, to pursue knowledge and advanced state-of-the-art electronics, and to maintain the highest international standards in teaching and research. With probably the best campus in Hong Kong, we provide a green and smoke-free environment to nurture your young minds to their fullest potential. But there is more than that. We in the EE Department endeavour to offer state-of-the-art programmes in a research orientated environment that is closely in touch with the present and future needs of Hong Kong industry. Rightly so, our degree programme has been accredited by the IEE (UK) since its inception and is now accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The department was first established in 1970 by Professor Charles Kao, an internationally renowned scientist, inventor of the optical fibre and our past Vice-Chancellor. For the past thirty seven years, we have grown steadily and we are now one of the largest departments in the Engineering Faculty of the University. We have 21 young, dynamic and talented as well as seasoned professors complemented by some 50 research and technical supporting staff. Our total undergraduate enrollment is close to 350 and there are approximately 90 full time graduate students pursuing master and doctoral degrees. What distinguishes us from the other engineering departments in Hong Kong? Well, as our name implies, we train electronic engineers for the electronic, computer and information technology industries. We are interested in the broad range of electronic systems, what they do, how they are designed and what goes into them. We are overwhelmingly experimental in approach - we like to see our ideas realised as working systems, circuits, devices or new electronic materials. Of course we use computers, not as an end in themselves but as a vital tool in achieving our goals. In addition to the emphasis on high quality teaching, we stress the importance of pursuing excellence in both fundamental and applied research in various major areas within the ever growing electronics discipline. The department's research activities have attracted significant funding from the industry and resulted in the publication of many high quality papers in reputable journals. To the potential students, it is our hope that if you join us we can infect you with our enthusiasm for our chosen profession and foster an interest that will stay with you throughout your career. The skills and knowledge acquired during your time with us will serve as a springboard for your professional advancement. May I sincerely invite you to spend a few minutes to browse our website and of course you are more than welcome to contact us to find out more. King Ngi Ngan |
